The 17% “drone factor” in polling

July 30, 2011

The Mark Levin Show, July 29, 2011—

Constitutional scholar, attorney, and radio talk show host Mark Levin made an interesting comment about survey polling reliability during his program yesterday.

Referencing Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth of just 1.7% for last quarter, he added for perspective that a sustained rate of 5 to 7% is needed to get out of a recession. Additionally, we saw a meager 0.4% increase in GDP through the quarter prior.

Mr Levin then cited a recent Rasmussen public opinion poll in which 75% of the US population surveyed said the economy is headed in the wrong direction.

Only 75% you say?

Regardless of your politics, whether you’d like to solely or collectively blame Democrats, Republicans, and/or Tea Party activists, it’s hard to imagine what that other 25% could objectively be thinking.

Mark Levin clearly thinks that the minority of respondents we’re discussing here see President Barack Obama as in control of and/or responsible for our current economic situation here in the United States. Thus, he noted that 17% “believe the economy is headed in the right direction” — based on a biased inability to see “their man” as anything but right.

“That’s the drone population,” he said on The Mark Levin Show in a segment that begins at 1:11:53 via podcast.

Curiously, two weeks ago I ran an analysis of James Bond fans vis-à-vis the Rolex watch brand and found that a 12 to 20% segment of those polled appear incapable of objective reply. Compared to the 17% about which Mr Levin just spoke, I’d call that “close enough for government work.”

The Rolex-cum-James Bond fan image of what “the right watch” should be is utterly unfazed by historical research or continuity considerations. Even their years-long rationalizations surrounding Rolex models that had piously insisted advocacy must defer to “what Ian Fleming originally specified” were blithely dismissed like spit through a tuba when indisputable evidence was found that Mr Fleming, himself, clearly disagreed with fan doctrine.

How could we expect any less of political passions?
