QuoteMe Wednesday—
Insincerity is a particular tough one for me. I’m okay with people who strongly disagree with me, even fevorently dislike me (if they feel it must come to that).
But there’s a particular sort of character who’ll look you in the eye and give every indication of unity, friendship, and dedication. So steeped in this they are that it’s hard to conceive of a notion that they, themselves, haven’t bought into their own fiction.
It’s to those vermon that I dedicate this refreshingly candid bit of dialogue from one of the mystery movies through which the Columbo series returned to television in 1989. “Grand Deceptions,” it’s called, with Robert Foxworthy as guest murderer Colonel Frank Brailie.
“You know, Colonel, the way we always agree with one another, that’s amazing — considering the fact that we really don’t like one another. Wouldn’t you have to agree with me on that?” Lt Columbo
“I think I’d have to agree.”
“You see? We agree again.”
Sadly, just the other night, when Mrs Deaton and I were watching this episode, we were both reminded of a most disagreeable fellow who’s my own most recent need, I suppose, for God to show me again this quote. I’ve already thanked Him for the reminder.
