After
discovering the curious — and
blatantly different — DeVille 4832.51.31 model watch
edition to its "Watch Selection James Bond" page, I inquired
directly to
Omega Sa, Bienne, Switzerland, on January 5, 2006, to find out more
about this watch they were promoting. (See first screen shot, left and
just below here: Even at this scale, the DeVille stands out as markedly
different from the watches.)
After all, I'm not just a James Bond
fan: I'm a proud owner of more than one Omega watch!
Back and forth went the eMails, with
specific references in most cases to the Omega 4832.51.31 DeVille
advertised on their website. Their advertising never changed. They
continued to represent this DeVille as part of the James Bond line. By
last Thursday at 11:05am (on
my SeMPC 2254.50), I was in communication with 5 Omega
officials, by name, regarding the new James Bond watch. And that night,
as you may recall, mi6.co.uk/ hit the Internet in a big way with my
observations.
My eMail flooded here, and I tried to
keep folks updated via Forums on both the Bond and watch aficionado
sites. As you can imagine, there was a fair share of "it can't be!"
responses. But,
in the wake of this growing visibility, Omega was
standing behind the 4832.51.31 DeVille in continuing to label it a Bond
watch.
More than a month had passed and
the watch was still there.
So I observed this fact on mi6.co.uk/
some time after midnight (less than 12 hours ago). Among other things, I
asked, If it's not a James Bond watch, do you think any lawyer
with a voice in this would have let them continue to represent it as
such for more than a month? And, at that, for the last four days — after
it became less than a handful of references to "James Bond" + "Omega" on
the Google News search?
And then— by 8:30am (on
my SeMPC 2254.50, when I checked the Omega SA site, it's "Watch
Selection James Bond" page had changed. The 4832.51.31 DeVille was gone.
(See second screen shot, left.)
So, now we know for
certain
that Omega officials have consciously and specifically reviewed what
they are now representing as "Watch Selection James Bond" entries.
Removed what has never been worn by 007 in a film. And what remains must
be the Real McCoy, right? (See third screen shot, left and just below
here.)
In what Bond film did the Omega
2535.80 appear?
You know, the watch on the right in
the current Omega SA "Watch Selection James Bond" page,
the one updated in the last 12
hours. Answer? None that I know of.
I guess the controversy continues....
