Exclusive: Omega corrects another 007 watch promo error

Official eMail to Dell Deaton, dated March 7, 2006

Photo: Dell Deaton at the debrief station in the "Bond, James Bond" exhibit, The Henry Ford, 1993After updating my own site, I shared a Post on the TimeZone "Omega Forum," titled, "Omega president apologizes for James Bond watch ad." To date, it's proving among the more highly read items on the site, with 727 clicks to date.

More importantly, I followed up directly with Omega SA regarding its persistent misrepresentation of the Seamaster 2535.80.00 as a "James Bond" watch. I am now here to report and "note" that Omega has finally corrected this error.

First and foremost, thank you for the courtesy of your reply.

Second -- I cannot accept your position that "This has now been rectified" and that this issue may now be considered "closed." Omega SA continues to represent its Seamaster 2535.80 GMT as a "James Bond" watch. Clear reference to "James Bond" *IS* made in the copy, and the information on your website *IS* "advertising."

> If the 2535.80 GMT has appeared as worn by the James Bond character in a film, please refer me to the film and scene for reference.

> If it has not, please immediately remove all advertising claims to the contrary on your website and elsewhere.

With all due respect, Omega SA has altered its "James Bond" watch references three times in less than a month now. I have acknowledgements in hand from Swatch USA public relations here in the United States, and the president of Omega in Switzerland stating that the Seamaster 2531.80 is the only Bond automatic. Thus, every moment that passes where you persist in Internet advertising that represents the GMT as a Bond watch does, indeed, show "intention" to have it "interpreted" as such.

That's just wrong.

Dear Sir

As I wrote in my TimeZone Post and elsewhere last Friday, "I believe that inaccurately listing watches w/ this credential may cause consumers to make purchases that end up disappointing them, may compromise resale values for the genuine article, and, overall, harms the credibility of Omega itself - with rippling effect....

"Truth in advertising doesn't end with pictures and words. You want to believe what you read about performance, specifications, and parts used in these high-end Swiss watches as well. Work such as this supports that."
