In what seems to me as a former PR
guy to be one of the more lackluster announcements to ride a franchise as
formidable as the EON
James Bond film
brand,
Omega SA finally announced
"the model" (singular) watch of its line to will be featured
by Agent
007 in Casino Royale. That, according to a press release issued
on May 17 — just about a month ago now.
For the life of me, I can't find much interest in it. (Search Google News for yourself as of today's date and you'll see what I mean.)
But then again,
we've had "official" words before on this matter.
So, what is the watch?
The Omega press release identifies it
as, and I quote, the "OMEGA Seamaster 300 M Diver Chronometer."
No model number is given; however, Omega goes out of its way to state
that this is "the OMEGA" (as opposed to any other Omega, I suppose), "so
closely associated with the iconic British secret agent that people all
over the world walk into OMEGA stores asking for 'the Bond watch.'"
With such pronounced emphasis on the
"the" here, and tying that to the model in stores that customers have
been asking for, this can only mean reference to the
model 2531.80 Seamaster.
Mind you— I am not
attesting to the veracity of this claim; I'm simply reporting on what
Omega is now saying.
"Substantiation" gets fuzzier when
you get to their official image. There is none, beyond what is visible
under the cuff of Daniel Craig in the overall James
Bond
image with gun drawn. To the left here is a high resolution close-up of
the only photograph Omega put
out with its official May 17 release.
Yes, Virginia, this is a high
resolution image. And that's all, folks.
Why would you put out a press release
on the James Bond Omega watch without actually showing
the James Bond Omega watch?
Now: What is not the watch?
Again, in defining the Casino
Royale timepiece, Omega goes out of its way three times to
characterize this as a singular James Bond watch:
They say "the model" and "the OMEGA" (emphasis added) in
the product description. Moreover, Omega clearly states that Casino
Royale will feature "none other." No reading between the lines on
that one.
