Admit it: You're a James Bond 007
film fan and you want to wear his watch. Good for you! But what sort of
watch does James Bond wear? and how does James Bond wear his watch?
Here's what I've been able to come up
with in my own research, organized by the links below this introduction.
You and James Bond are different
Before we go too far down this path,
there are some things we have to keep in mind as part of any
emulation-driven thinking here.
 |
First, as a real person living a real
life, there is only so close you can get to replicating a big-screen
presentation.
|
Consider this photo caption under a
padded, metal case containing 5 separate
Omega Seamaster 2531.80 watches (along with some of the
off-screen additions required to make them work as Q gadgets), in The
Essential Bond.
"You may only see Bond wear one, but
the special effects department needed five specially adapted watches to
achieve the on-screen action."
In the movie, James Bond can swim in
saltwater of Crab Key wearing his
Rolex on a leather strap. Later, the
watch appears pristine for an elegant dinner with Dr. No. You can't do
this, of course — because 007 never does it. Camera angles
and between scene property changes are the trick to what his watches can
do.
If the watch needs to stay in place
during a passionate encounter at Oxford, "brushing up on a little
Danish," why, simply tape the watch to Mr. Brosnan's wrist.
But you wouldn't try that at home.
 |
Second, a lot of people have had a
lot to say about how "one man" wears his watch.
|
Not just Q-Branch for styling,
either. Different actors interpreting the role and bringing unique
physicalities to the mix. Different production teams. Different
technologies in terms of watch-making, and different style influences
from 1962 (and before) to present-day.
So there's a limit here as to how
close you can ever get to James Bond and his watches. My purpose here is
to help you make your pursuit of that proximity an informed decision.
