Jurassic Park, Steven
Spielberg

"Alan?" Lex (Ariana Richards).
"Yeah?" Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill).
"What if the dinosaurs come back
while we're all asleep?"
"Well—. I'll stay awake."
— Great film takes us through
meaningful character transformation, and that, in my opinion, is at the
heart of why the first Jurassic Park is outstanding. Recall that Dr.
Grant is introduced as a passionate, but distant man regarding children.
Yet here, in response to the classic child-seeking-comfort question, he
gives the perfect, loving response. Good example for anyone considering
the mantle of stepparent as well.

"Having a family is like having a
bowling alley installed in your head."
— Said after he'd become a
stepfather, a most admirable role. (Trivia note: The central chair in my
office was a gift to me based on the one he used in Fernwood 2-Night.)

"When my children were little, I read
to them nightly…. You should read to them in your own voice and not be
too dramatic (and I'm an actor!). Remember, it's not about you, it's
about them."
— In other words, it's not about you,
it's about them.

"Many parents try so hard to boost
'self-esteem' that they forget where it comes from. We feel good about
ourselves when we're effective in the world. Help your son acquire the
skills and knowledge he needs to succeed ... An inflated sense of
self-worth without underlying abilities is useless, if not dangerous."
— Kids know when you're BS'ing 'em.
They also know themselves, and praising them for the mere sake of praise
itself is not only dismissed, but will also harden them to any
meaningful, substance-based praise you may salt in there as well.

"As long as their are children, there
are hostages."
— "Oh, yeah, but not in my
situation," right? Wish I didn't hear that response as often as I do.
